This 1941 Packard 120 Convertible Coupe has been in Southern California since at least 1955. It’s full of equipment, including 288 cubic inch straight 8 engine, 3 speed transmission with overdrive, radio, heater, factory inner and outer beauty rings, bumper guards and the glass-winged Goddess of speed hood ornament! I also note what’s left of the electromatic clutch system. It’s complete, and ready to restore, but it doesn’t run. Or maybe, dare I even say it, resto-mod it?
.
The Packard 120 was a tremendous value when it was new – all that Packard quality at a very reasonable price!
.
Here it is in 1955 California, with the same engine that’s in it now, D314825 !
.
Can you imagine this car all finished?
.
One day a few years ago, Dad and I were out hunting for cars to buy – and the ’41 Packard 120 showed up on the interweb radar. It really grabbed him because it was just like the second car he ever bought, shown in this photo. That car replaced the supercharged Graham sharknose that dissolved it’s cylinder head back sometime in 1948. Surely that first ’41 Packard is long gone, but here was something that sparked the good memory of Packard driving back when Packard was still in business! So we bought it and brought it back to the shop.
.
Unfortunately, Dad’s gone now, and I think it’s time for a new owner to bring this car to the next stage.
.
The glass is good, the windows roll up and down.
.
A good solid place to start
.
These plates were in the trunk – look at the 1977 Sticker! It’s registered to modern plates now, with the engine number – the same one as on that 1955 registration slip – as the VIN number.
.
that’s the original firewall tag, and the 1499 prefix tells us this is a genuine 120 Convertible coupe – or as the factory had it, the “Coupe-Convertible, 2 – 4 Passengers”
.
.
Dashboard intact, plastic is pretty good.
.
Rear seat. Yes, it will need to be restored. Or, you know, make it run and cruise it as a barn find!
.
The top mechanism is all there, and the header latch works too.
.
Here it is with the combination top / sunroof up ! 🙂
.
All there and ready to restore!
.
Glass winged Goddess of Speed mascot
.
So there’s the 8 cylinder engine – zero compression when it came in, now between zero and 45 PSI after the in-car valve job. Still not enough to make it run. It’s either rebuild it, or LS-6 it!
.
Driver’s side of the engine bay.
.
the floors, frame, and under the trunk are nice and solid, original sheetmetal.
.
Even though it’s a California car, it looks like it got rained on and had some rust where the water collected
.
Needs a bit of sheetmetal repair – I’m just not the guy for it!
.
The key works in the ignition.
.
Here’s the radio.
.
And the Packard Heater.
.
It’s always 5 minutes after 3, 1941
.
Great lines, and a great start on a fun car
.
Here’s a good view of the inner beauty rings – they run right up to the hubcap, and have the same 4 ridge contours as the hubcap. the missing rear fender strip is included, it’s just a little tweaked.
.
And in this final view, we get a good look at the triple bar bumper guard. Call us at 714-401-1047 Pacific daylight business hours if you have questions!
